Oh my. Microsoft is at it again trying to do a ‘hip’ ad. They started with paying Jerry Seinfeld tons of money to do confusing and pointless ads with Bill Gates. This quickly ended and we then started seeing the ‘Im a PC’ ads. Next up is the little kids playing with digital cameras on their laptops. Now, Microsoft is putting out what seems to be a ‘reality’ type ad, looking for the best computer deals, and pointing out that Macs are overpriced.
My favorite line – ‘I’m just not cool enough to be a Mac person’. Yes, because the type of computer (or phone) you use is what makes you cool. I love my Macs, but come on people – a computer (and its OS) is a tool. Choose the tool you need to get your job done.
Personally, if Microsoft would use this as a real ad – I would totally buy another PC.
37Signals, the people who make amazing products like Basecamp (a project management suite) and Backpack (a wiki like web application) and also pretty much designed and developed Ruby on Rails, have a great blog called Signal vs. Noise. They posted a harsh, yet very real post today that ‘there is always time to launch your dream‘.
To many people today want to make a quick buck or have everything handed to them on a silver platter, like they deserve it (similar reasoning to why I made this tweet earlier today). Yes, I personally have complained about ‘not having the time to do something’, but I take full responsibility in the fact that I just didn’t want to use the time doing that particular thing.
But in recent months, I have realized that I should just stop wasting my time and get the job done. In some cases, this can actually be very rewarding in the end. For example, I have seen at least 3 ideas I have had come to fruition in the last year (and not by me), where I could have had a very similar product MUCH EARLIER if I had just taken the time to flush something out. Or, one could finish a product and get it distributed (whether its a website, mobile application, or even desktop application) and start making money – its obviously not going to make any money if its not released.
This can go both ways as well. It’s like when you were a little kid. Get your chores done and you can play with your toys. Not to long ago, I was working 70 hour weeks all the time. And since I just had so much work, friendships, relationships, and even other job opportunities suffered. Now that I have a job that I love, and don’t nearly have to work as much on that, all of the above can thrive.
If you are passionate about what you are going to do – it feels less and less like work. As said in the article, ‘If you want it bad enough, you will make the time’.
As I mentioned a few months ago, I was given the opportunity to join some great guys in developing the new Alexandria.com. This is going to be a co-developed site, where I will actually be developing the Alexandria, Virginia side (http://va.alexandria.com), with others developing the Egyptian side (for Alexandria, Egypt). Well, today, after a few months of posting, editing, and organization, we are launching!
Currently there is content for Hotels, Apartments, Jobs, Events, and more. Later this week we should also be launching our business section, as well as some maps and more area information.
This site is going to be growing by leaps and bounds in the coming months as I add more and more content. Follow us on twitter for latest updates and more as well!
I had to take our truck to work today. While at 272,000 miles it still runs great, it took me 30 min to get most off. I hate being short, was a pain to reach half of the windshield!
The last ‘real’ amount of snow we got in Richmond was December 2005, with a little over 4 inches of snow. Before that, it had been a few years as well. While Richmond gets really crazy weather, we don’t get much snow anymore. This is a major difference, because through middle school and high school, we had plenty of snow days!
The snow started last night, and at the time of this posting its still snowing (supposed to stop in the next couple of hours). So far (at least at our house) we have recieved at least 6″, closer to 8″ plus right now. Deb’s work was closed last night, while I didn’t find out about mine until 6 AM.
I was able to take a few shots last night and this morning, and plan to take more once I can actually get outside so the camera doesn’t get messed up.
This is also my first try of using iPhoto ’09 Flickr syncing.
Finally, Church Hill People’s News has a post for people sharing their snow photos around Richmond!
